It is almost 38 hour narrated as an audiobook and covers Peter's life in three segments, his rise to power, wars (mostly witRobert Massie's "Peter the Great: His life and World" has been a wonderful book to listen to, for me. I loved Nicholas and Alexandra! The influence on Massie of Russian epic narrative is unmistakable; his book flows like a natural force.

When he backs up to put Peter in the context of the 18th century by comparing him to other rulers who were also autocratic and even brutal when necessary but get better press because their homelands aren't as mysterious as Russia, his writing is special. In the first and most visible of Peter's reforms, beards, heavy boots, and long robes were proscribed--thereby jettisoning, Massie astutely notes, ""Russian habits whose existence was based on common sense."" Robert K. Massie won my heart with his book about Catherine the Great, so I definitely had to read the one about Peter as well. He was president of the Authors Guild from 1987 to 1991. The descriptions are beyond parallel. It wasn't that I didn't want to read it--I mean, it won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Biography--it was that every time I go to the library I emerge with an armload of books and, at over 900 pages, this book could literally inflict damage if it slipped from my grasp and fell.
